チーズはチーズ屋さん、お肉はお肉屋さん、パンはパン屋さんへ。
スーパーマーケットじゃなくてそれぞれの専門店で食材を買うライフスタイル、良いですね。
帰宅途中に夕飯のお買い物で賑わうモンマルトルの夕方、この日は私もローカルに混じってチーズやバゲットを買って帰りました。
I don’t speak French, but grocery shopping in France is fun. Food is the universal language.

もう去年のクリスマス前のことになりますが、「素敵なカフェがオープンしたから行ってみよう」と友達に誘われて行ってきたこのお店、私の最近のお気に入りスポットです。
のんびりした住宅街の一角にある古い家の一階のドアを押して入ると、そこには「Marché St. George (マルシェ セイント・ジョージ)」の世界が広がります。
ちょっとしたカフェにもなっているこの食料雑貨店は、イメージとしては南フランスの田舎町を思い浮かばせるような、でもニューヨークのブルックリンにも似合いそうな古いものと新しいものが心地よく調和する魅力的な場所です。
上の写真の中央にいるおじさんはまるで映画のワンシーンから出てきたよう。自分の家から持ってきたマグカップをそっとカウンターに差し出して熱々のコーヒーを注いでもらっているのを待っているシーンです。私は思わずカメラを構えてしまいました。
この日はここの自慢のクロワッサンとカプチーノを頼んで、窓際に置かれたアンティークチェアにちょっと腰を掛けながらお店の人と会話を交わしたり。（右上に写っている素敵なブーツを履いているのが店員さんです。）
店内には焼きたてのパンや、見たからにもかわいいオーガニックジャム、トマトソースなどインポートものも豊富に並び、食品以外でも選りすぐりの石鹸、アンティークリネンのキッチンタオルやショールなど色々置いてあります。ここのオーナーの奥さんは陶芸家でもあり、彼女の素晴らしい作品 (ジャナキ・ラーセン）もここで手に入れることが出来ます。このお店は隅から隅まで本当にセンスが良いです。
ローカルの人たちが気軽に立ち寄ってのんびりおしゃべり。ここは子供も大人もくつろげる憩いの場所になっているみたいです。
買い物に来たついでにコーヒーでも、、、
お茶に来ただけだどついでに今日の夕飯に何か買って行こう、、、
と、ここはそんな気軽さがちょうど心地良いのです。
“Let’s go!”, my friend sent me a message one day and we went to check out this new cafe/grocery store in the neighbourhood not too far away from my apartment. (This is last December.)
“Marché St. George“, I love the name already! They’re located in the middle of peaceful residential area, and this place appeared to be an unexpected wonderful surprise to me. You push the entrance door of an old house and there a lovely world of Marché St. George begins.
It’s like countryside of South France or some neighbourhood of Brooklyn NY. I love the space with the old and new things blending together comfortably.
It’s almost cinematic to watch people talk and shop there.
The old gentleman in the first photo (middle) slowly walked in with his own mug cup in his hand. He put it down on the counter table and smiled. Then almost automatically, the hot coffee was getting poured in his large mug cup. I had to quickly hold my camera when I saw that.
They have the freshly baked bread, the artisan cheeses and meats, the carefully-selected import products, and organically-grown vegetables. They serve great coffee and delicious tea, too.
My eyes started shining more and more when I saw the beautiful ceramics made by Janaki Larsen (I love her work!) on the table surrounded with the antique linen kitchen towels, handmade soaps and all the beautifully packaged items.
They’re such lovely and friendly people and have a great taste. It’s my latest favourite spot in Vancouver BC.
