Watchmaker (Tokyo)
ニューヨークの時計屋さんに引き続き、ここは以前東京（西荻）で見つけた貴重な時計屋さんです。去年、長い間動いていないまま保管されていたおじいちゃんの時計を見つけたので、実家の近所にあるこのお店をたまたま見つけて入ってみたんです。なぜ看板は「めがね」なのか不思議な程、店の中は時計だらけでびっくりしました。
店の奥に座っているおじいさんが時計を熱心に見てくれて、しっかり直してくれました。
こういうお店は貴重な存在ですね。

My grandfather’s old watch was stored and forgotten in a box and it probably stopped working for a few decades. In Tokyo last year, I took it to this small watch store with the sign that said “glasses”.
The store inside was filled with old clocks and watches, and there was just “stuff” everywhere. I almost didn’t notice the old gentleman sitting at the back of the store. He is the excellent watchmaker that gave my grandfather’s watch a life again.
Very rare spot.

Watchmaker
私には大切にしている腕時計が二つあります。一つはおじいちゃんの、もう一つはおばあちゃんが昔していた古い腕時計です。三ヶ月程前におじいちゃんの時計が壊れ，しばらく信頼の出来る時計屋さんを探していたところ、たまたまヴィンテージ時計好きの人を知っていた友人から「古い時計の修理ならここが良い」という情報をもらいました。
先日その時計おじさんを訪ねてみる事にしました。
ニューヨークの騒がしいチャイナタウンを通り抜けて、ジュエリー専門のモールがずらっと建ち並ぶ一角にあるビルが目的地です。中に入って奥へ進むと、小さな机に向かって黙々と作業をしているおじいさんがいました。彼がそのウォッチメーカー、William Schneier、通称ウィリーです。
片言の会話を交わし、私の壊れた時計を見せると彼は特に何も言わずに時計の修理をし始めました。
ガラスのショーケースには廃れた腕時計がぽろっと２個くらいしか入っていなかったけど、彼の机の上や引き出しの中は細かい部品や道具等で一杯でした。かなり年期が入っている感じです。
私のおじいちゃんが1950年代頃に購入したと思われるこの古い腕時計。無事修理が終わり、コチコチと動き出しました。
ついでにおばあちゃんの腕時計のストラップも新しく付け替えてもらいました。腕時計のストラップ等の在庫はあまり無いようでしたが、年期の入った古い箱をもそもそと引っ張り出して見せてくれたので、私はその箱の中からこのトカゲの皮のストラップを発見。色もサイズもばっちり、ラッキーでした。
このおじいさん、タダモノではなさそうです。

I have an old watch from my grandfather and it needed to be fixed. Someone told me to go see William, the watchmaker. He is an old gentleman with few words. He quietly looked at my watch and handed it back to me in 5 minutes.
It started ticking again.
I found a beautiful leather watch band by accident from one of his old boxes that were piled up underneath his desk. It was a perfect size and colour for my another precious watch, that used be my grandmother’s.
It was magic.

Summer Solstice
６月の末にバンクーバーのアートギャラリー「Or Gallery」が主催となって『ジンとヴォッカのテイスティング』イベントが開かれました。
イベントはチケット制で、ゲストはジンとヴォッカそれぞれ３種類ずつを試飲しながら好みのお酒を楽しむ、という内容。用意されたお酒はもちろん全てプレミアムなものばかり。場所はOr Galleryのダイレクターのスタジオ兼自宅の素晴らしい一軒家にて。大きなダイニングテーブルには簡単につまいやすいサラミ，チーズ、バゲットなどが用意され、自家製オリジナルのレモネードも登場。
この家の持ち主はインテリアに関してはホントにセンス抜群。もともと小さな教会だった所を改装して何年もかけてこんな素敵なインテリアに仕上げたそうです。うらやまし〜。
今回私はバーテンダーとして参加したので友達と一緒にパーティーのセッティング等を手伝ったりしてました。

ミラーボールの照明が水玉模様に部屋中に反射して幻想的な感じでした。
さて、パーティー，ビギンです。
上のボトルはドイツ製のとっても珍しいジン。この日一番人気があったジンです。
アートギャラリーのイベントだったのでやっぱり来ていたお客さんもアーティスト、コレクター、キュレイターなど沢山面白い人たちに囲まれ盛り上がっていました。
ずっとどんよりした天気が続いていたバンクーバー、この日はとっても良いお天気に恵まれラッキーでした。
美味しいジンとヴォッカを飲みながら絶え間のない会話のざわざわした音とステレオから流れてくる音楽に囲まれ、夏の暑く長〜い夜が更けていくのでした。

Or Gallery and the Friends of the Or Gallery hosted a special event, ”Summer Solstice Vodka vs Gin Tasting” party last month. It was a beautiful hot sunny evening and I was lucky enough to join their lovely occasion. I got there a bit earlier to help them set up with food and drinks. The location was already like a magazine spread and the whole space looked even more magical with the polka dot lights spinning from the mirror ball. This house is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen… Around 7 pm, people started showing up, the music was on, and the party was begun. There were lots of delicious food and excellent premium spirits to enjoy. The music was comfortably blended with the sound of people talking and laughing in the room. The golden light from the windows was slowly changing its colour to purple towards the deeper night. I stepped outside in the garden and I felt a cool breeze on my face. Everything was wonderful.

Pon-Pon
「こんなとこに靴屋さん？珍しい」
西荻を散歩中（もう去年の秋のことになりますが。）、通りがかりの小さな家の表に植物の蔓と一緒にいくつか靴がぶら下がっているのが目に入ったのでそっと扉を押して入ってみました。
中は私が想像していたものとは全く違っていてびっくりしました。
ここは「Pon-Pon」という名の手作り靴専門店です。企画デザインから製造販売まで靴をここで一つ一つしっかり造っているんですね。カウンター越しに見える作業場は古い機械や沢山の道具が並んでいて私の興味を一気に引き付けました。
私は「作業場」というものにとても魅力を感じます。モノが作り上げられていく過程を見るのが好きなんです。ここでは靴を作っている現場を見たわけではないんですが、作業場と商品がこんなに近くに、そしてオープンに隣り合わせに並んでいる空間がとても印象的でした。
上は、中で作業中だったにも関わらず手を止めて気さくに対応してくれた靴職人の江口克司さんです。ふら〜と入ってきた私にも親切にお店のこと、西荻のこと、靴作りのことなど色々話を聞かしてくれました。
ここに並ぶ靴もそれぞれストーリーがあるんだと思います。私は靴作りのことはよく知らないけれど常に興味深い分野です。靴は履く人のパーソナリティーが出ますね。デザインもそうだけど革の質感や形のゆがみ具合なんかも「味」なんだと思います。Pon-Ponの靴はそういった味が楽しめながらずっと履けそうです。まだ一足も履いた事ないけど，この空間に入ってきて江口さんの話を聞いていてそれは伝わってきました。しっかりした構成と優しいデザインのバランス良いんです。
ちなみに「なんでポンポンなんですか？」って聞いたら、江口さんが「靴を作る時のトンカチのことをポンポンって言うんです」って教えてくれました。なるほど、ぴったりの名前です。
今度西荻に帰ってきた時は一足買いに行こうと思います。
The random shoes hanging outside the little building caught my eye. I was curious and decided to push the entrance door.
When I walked in, it was nothing like what I expected.
This is a shoe shop called “Pon-Pon” (located in Nishiogikubo, Tokyo). They’re specialized in all handmade bespoke shoes.
It was a studio space more than a shop. The huge antique iron machine was in front of me and I noticed lots of boxes, name tags and a bunch of tools scattered around there.
They have work boots, hiking boots, dress shoes and all sorts, carefully handcrafted by the shoemakers using the old classic European technique. The design is unique and has a great balance of European and Japanese aesthetics.
I don’t know much about shoemaking, but I always find it fascinating.
Pon-Pon’s shoemaker, Katsuji Eguchi was kind enough to stop whatever he was doing at the desk, and he started telling me his stories about the shop, shoemaking, his family, etc.
It was almost a surreal experience for me in one afternoon. I didn’t expect to have such an interesting conversation with the shoemaker that I had never known before. I believe that every pair of shoes come with a story or maybe the customers bring their own and the stories would continue with the shoes and time from here again.
“Where did the name come from?”, I asked.
He said, “The shoemakers call their hammers Pon-Pon”.
I see! Pon-Pon is a word that describes the sound/action for pounding in Japanese.
