Sokokashiko

The white walls have no sign. It’s just the heavy wooden doors that are left open. The Chinese character on the short curtain behind the door says “Dream”.

This is a pottery gallery/shop I visited at the end of my short trip to Mashiko, Japan in May 2012. I liked their open concept design and the stunning garden. With no glass windows, all I heard was the viewers’ foot steps and the leaves trembling.  The atmosphere was discreet, yet organic and pleasant.  ”Dream” was right.

There’s a set of small tea cups my father favours at home in Japan.  They are always placed neatly and carefully on the top of the dining kitchen shelf. They’re white, simple, light, smooth and delicate. Every single night, after dinner, my father chooses the white small tea cup and serves his green tea. He takes his tea seriously and likes to drink it out of his favourite cup. I have the same habit. I don’t drink green tea every night like my father, but I do have my favourite cups to drink coffee or tea out of daily. Something about the cup’s texture, colour or its size, it’s such a small detail but it makes my daily routine a little more special. Clearly it was my father who taught me how to appreciate things like that in daily life.

My father had an opportunity to visit the pottery master in Mashiko (Tochigi), Japan, who made his favourite tea cups. So I followed.

In the middle of nowhere, deeper in the mountain, far away from other houses, there was an old house standing quietly and peacefully.

The master’s words were not too many. When I saw his aged hands, the story was there.

毎回日本に帰る度に焼き物の町を訪れるのが私の楽しみの一つです。

海外に住みはじめてから長くなるからか、昔から馴染んで来た文化や伝統が時には新鮮に、時には懐かしく、魅力的に感じられるのです。

今回５月に訪れたのは栃木県益子町。益子焼の町です。

丁度ゴールデンウェークの陶器市が終わった後だったので辺りはのんびり。

雲一つない青空の下に広がる野外マーケットにはこの町で作られた陶器がずらりと並んでいました。

ふと目線を遠くに離すと緑の山脈が連なる日本ならではの田舎風景が広がります。

鮎の塩焼き、誰もいない陶芸教室の机に几帳面に並べられた皿たち、机の上に厚く重ねられた新聞紙。

所狭しと並ぶ陶器たち。そして、人々の会話や優しい笑顔。

ちょっとしたところに、ふとした時に感じられる、そんな日本の温かさが良いのです。

A day trip to Mashiko.

(Mashiko is  a town located in Tochigi prefecture, Japan.  It’s known for its pottery, called mashikoyaki.)

Under the blue sky, surrounded by the endless green mountains, the air was fresh.

I came across an outdoor pottery market.

Watching the scenery from a distance.

Ayu (sweetfish) on the wooden sticks on the charcoal grill,

An empty pottery class with the neatly placed tools,

A thick pile of newspaper on the table,

Smiles on the people’s faces.

４月に帰国した時にまた一つ素敵な場所に出会いました。

「Poool」という名のギャラリーショップ。ちょっと古い感じの建物の一階にひっそりと存在しています。ここでは国内外のクリエイターたちと共に、日々の暮らしをちょっとだけ「特別」なものにしてくれるモノたちが紹介、提案されています。

 吉祥寺は昔から馴染みのある街だけど、こんな素敵な空間を発見したのは久しぶりでした。

この日、陶芸作家の個展が開かれていました。私好みの陶器の作品がバランス良くディスプレイされ、どれも素晴らしい作品ばかり、とても印象的でした。

ここに一歩踏み入れたとたん私は一瞬にしてこの場所に心惹かれました。中の大きな窓から差し込む自然光が中の空間をゆったりと照らし、時間の流れを忘れてしまうほどでした。

シンプルで良質なものに触れていると「こんな風なライフスタイルの中で暮らしてみたい」という私の理想像をどんどん膨らませてくれます。

またお気に入りの場所が一つ増えましたね。

お久しぶりです。久々のブログ更新です。

これは先月、友人をうちに呼んで簡単な写真撮影をした時の風景です。今年の夏は色々と新しいプロジェクトを始め、その一つがウェブサイトを作ったり、ウェブショップをデザインしたり、、、など。今回は私のセレクトで日本の陶器を中心に、ちょっとした食べ物を和えてシンプルに撮影してみました。

特にコンセプトを決めずにホントに自然な流れで「じゃ、やってみよう」の一言であるお天気の良い日にのんびり楽しく友達と集まってみました。

Utsuwa: A general term used in the pottery world pertaining mostly to items used at the table.

My friends and I have been working on some small projects together this summer. There are still many things to plan and organize, but we decided to do a little photo shoot together for fun one day.

お料理の上手なゆみちゃんには器にのせる食べ物を用意してもらいました。

Yumiko is an excellent cook. She’s preparing the food to go with every plate before the shoot.

ロリはセンスのいいフォトグラファー。何も言わないでも私好みの写真を撮ってくれるんです。この日は楽しみながら沢山撮ってくれました。

Lori kindly agreed to take pictures of my selection of Japanese pottery. The results were beautiful. (I can’t wait to share them with you here one day soon.)

こんな感じで私は色々計画中なのです。

撮影が一段落したらお昼です。撮影で使った食べ物がそのまま私達のランチに。

We wrapped our shoot and all we had to do left was to eat all the food Yumiko made for the shoot. Delicious and fun lunch breaks are my favourite thing.

さ、小林さんのお庭をぐるっとまわった次は「不言窯」を見せて頂きました。

「不言窯」は小林さんの自作で、赤松の割木で１週間ほど焚き続ける古式の穴窯のことです。

After walking around their house and the garden (see Part 1), Mrs.Kobayashi took us to the garage area to show the Anagama kiln (an ancient type of pottery kiln), which Mr.Kobayashi built and named as “Fugen-gama”. His anagama is fueled with Japanese red pine firewood. The length of the firing depends on the volume of the kiln but may take anywhere from 48 hours to 1 week or more.

「これはアメリカのお客さんから注文がきたのよ。」と奥さんが青いビニールをばさっとはがしてみせてくれたのはこの大きな壺でした。

小林さんの最新の作品だそうです。この大きさと鮮やかな信楽焼独特の発色、間近で見るとかなりインパクトあります。

These huge pots are the artist’s latest work for his private client. They were absolutely impressive! and I loved the natural Shigaraki colour and the green glaze on the surface.

I saw another big one still in the kiln.

窯の中にはまだもう一つ大きな壺が入っていました。

小林さんにとってもこんな大きなの壺の作成は、この登り窯でも出し入れが厄介でかなりの挑戦になったそうですが、結果は見ての通り本当に立派でした。

信楽は、付近の丘陵から良質の陶土がでる土地柄で知られています。長い歴史と文化に支えられ、伝統的な技術によって今日にも伝えられて、日本六古窯のひとつに数えられています。

信楽の土は、耐火性に富み、可塑性とともに腰が強いといわれ、「大物づくり」に適し、かつ「小物づくり」においても細工しやすい粘性でもあります。

信楽特有の土味を発揮して、登窯、窖窯の焼成によって得られる温かみのある火色（緋色）の発色と自然釉によるビードロ釉と焦げの味わいが特色で、土と炎が織りなす芸術として“わびさび”の趣があります。

Shigaraki (the south of Shiga prefecture) is surrounded by mountains and red pine is the native plant there. Red pine contains resin good enough for fueling kilns and it was a luck for pottery making at Shigaraki. Also the local clay is one of the best as it is fine and hard with small pebbles of feldspar and less iron.

Shigaraki ware is admired for the unexpected finish performed by the Nature. Small pebbles of feldspar come out to the surface when fired and create inartificial rugged touch. Ash from the wood fuel fuses with clay and turning green or brown gives the random ash-glaze effect to the pieces.

父の仕事のコネのおかげで今回の旅行中、信楽焼の小林勇超（弘幸）さんの不言窯を訪問することが出来ました。

長い歴史のある信楽焼は数多くの名工と呼ばれる陶芸作家を輩出してきたことでも知られ、小林さんは現在も活躍中の信楽焼の匠の一人です。

残念ながらご本人は個展のため留守でお会いすることはできなかったけど、奥様がご親切に案内してくれました。まずはご自宅の方でお茶をごちそうになり、父は昔の仕事の思い出話等に花を咲かしてました。小林さん作の素敵なお湯のみで飲むお茶はひと際美味しいもんです。

Visiting some Japanese ceramic artists was one of the highlights of my holiday in Japan this time.

We came to visit Mr. Yuchou Kobayashi, one of the greatest Shigaraki-yaki masters in Japan. My dad has known him for years through his business and I was lucky to view his gorgeous house/atelier and his self-built huge kiln called “Fugengama”.

Mr. Kobayashi was attending his own exhibition somewhere that day, so I couldn’t meet him unfortunately, but his wife was kind enough to show us around their place. The tea served in the cup made by Kobayashi-san tasted exceptionally wonderful! (The orange one in the photo above.)

家の中にはあちこちに信楽焼の素晴らしい作品が飾ってありました。

His work neatly displayed everywhere.

日本の家ってやっぱりいいね〜。

I love the old authentic Japanese houses like this.

裏庭を通っていくと倉庫らしき建物があり、ここの扉を開けると、、、

大きなガス窯があります。

This is his gas kiln stored in a shed in their back yard.

地面を見ると欠けたとっくりや陶器の破片が草に混じって落ちてたりします。

これ、実家のおもてに置いてあるんです。ちょっとかわいい。

あの有名な信楽のたぬきもとなりにいるけど、この丸さといい顔といい、見るたびにくすっとさせられる。

玄関先のアレンジはうちの母の担当。きれいになってたんで今回実家に帰った時一番に目につきました。

うちは陶器屋だから信楽等の焼き物に囲まれて私も育ちました。

There are always some random pottery sitting around at my parents’ house.

I liked the way my mum arranged the plants with the old Japanese pots at the entrance.
